Universal appears to have established waves of releasing the same titles they started releasing on HD DVD before the format went under and the first wave is what they are considering their Blu-ray Action Starter Pack. This collection, whose titles can also be purchased individually, contains the Blu-ray editions of Miami Vice, End of Days and U-571. These are three titles I am sure all of you recognize, but I am not entirely sure they are three titles anyone really recognizes as good. However, these releases show promise for future Bd releases out of Universal, which is a good thing. First off, the best of the bunch is easily Michael Mann's highly flawed Miami Vice. This is a film that upset me more than you can possibly imagine. Mann looked like he had the perfect cast and "Miami Vice" was his baby. I actually watched this one

Hey look, it's real news about a Quentin Tarantino movie that is actually in production as opposed to that Britney Spears bullsh!t that was being tossed around yesterday. Today we get word that Brad Pitt has signed on the dotted line and will star in Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards and joining him in early casting are Eli Roth (director of Hostel) and B.J. Novak ("The Office", Knocked Up). Pitt will play a Tennessee hillbilly who assembles a team of eight Jewish-American soldiers. Eli Roth will play the role of Sgt. Donnie Donowitz, and Tarantino is locking in the other seven American actors who make up the Bastards team. Novak is expected to play Pfc Utivich, described as a soldier of slight build who comes from New York. The film centers on a band of U.S. soldiers facing death by firing squad for their misdeeds are given a chance to

So Tropic Thunder is taking a lot of fire for being politically incorrect. And it is. But not too many people can say it isn't funny. And after all, haven't the last couple of summers been the summers of the politically incorrect yet funny comedies? Knocked Up, Superbad and, before that, Borat? Remember how much fun you had laughing at all that inappropriateness with big beered-up crowds at the Alamo? Well the thrill is back.
Speaking of a thrill, here's some video of the adrenaline junkies from Ain't It Cool News, The Alamo Drafthouse and Fantastic Fest, running through the tunnel of hate we call The Shit to get free seats at the August 1st advance screening of Tropic Thunder at the Alamo South Lamar. That's live ammo they're dodging. Well, live paintball ammo. But it still hurts. And today we honor their legacy.
Get your tickets for Tt at the Ritz and Village.

Though critics may be divided over "Pineapple Express" . at the time of this writing, it weighs in at 57% on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer . there is a consensus about at least one aspect of the Judd Apatow-produced stoner comedy: surprise over the choice of David Gordon Green as director. As Roger Ebert puts it in his positive review of the film, Green, "that poet of the cinema, is the last person you'd expect to find directing a male-buddy comedy about two potheads who start a drug war." Based on some of his own past comments, Green might be inclined to agree with him; when promoting his debut film "George Washington" a few years ago, Green told Charlie Rose, "I'm interested in any movie that's not like other movies. Growing up, I wasn't so much a 'Star Wars' or 'Raiders' kind of kid. I was a guy who'd watch 'Walkabout.

I really enjoyed Pineapple Express. I really think Seth Rogen is damn funny. And in a few recent films he has proven that. From Knocked Up to Superbad and a kick arse cameo in Step Brothers, this guy is very freaking funny. But who knew James Franco could be this hilarious. Okay, I know he was there alongside the rest of the gang in .Freaks and Geeks., but he practically stole the show here. And this is Harry Osborn from Spider-man! Hell, even his wardrobe is chuckle inducing. Now...

Frequently hilarious, occasionally sweet and often graphically violent, "Pineapple Express" may not be the greatest stoner movie ever made, but it will do perfectly well until we get another hit of Harold and Kumar.
Seth Rogen and James Franco have terrific chemistry as, respectively, a semi-straight stoner and the addled drug dealer who finally achieves his goal of becoming the stoner's pal when the two are obliged to go on the run from a band of killers.

Life as a pothead is hard in the new millennium
Photo: Universal Pictures Pineapple Express is a little bit of good mixed with a whole lot of decent. Despite the film's rather enjoyable finale there are too many dull moments building up to it. Seth Rogen's star is slowly dwindling as he is increasingly proving to be a one trick pony, but what really let me down here was James Franco. After his Funny or Die series of "Acting with James Franco" videos maybe I was expecting a little too much, but those videos made me laugh far more than anything Franco did here. The film is billed as a raunchy stoner comedy, but in all actuality, while weed may be the driving force behind the plot there isn't a whole lot of weed smoking going on here. Franco plays Saul, a resident drug dealer specializing in marijuana and

I.m not afraid to admit that I am a massive Judd Apatow fan. He is creating some of the best comedies I.ve seen in ages. He brought us The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up to name a couple, and he has been the man in charge for several other terrifically funny flicks. With Superbad, he gave his support to a charmingly crude script co-written by Seth Rogen and the equally talented Evan Goldberg. He is on board again championing Seth and Evan.s writing skills with this latest tale of...

Craig Robinson is set for life. Having already appeared in Knocked Up and with a plum gig on The Office, his role in the upcoming Pineapple Express will only solidify his place in the Apatow crew. Even more so, he finally has his own screensaver up on Funny or Die (a rite of passage these days), the comedy gang's cyber playpen. Craig is coming up fast and hard, and rightfully so. The guy's hilarious. See more Craig Robinson videos at Funny or Die

In addition to chatting with David Gordon Green at Comic-Con, we also caught up with Seth Rogen, not only the star of Pineapple Express, but also the writer and executive producer. In short time, Rogen has become one of the most well-known comedic actors and has consistently delivered laughs in everything he's in, from Knocked Up to Superbad to Kung Fu Panda (as the voice of Mantis). In addition to Kevin Smith's Zack and Miri Make a Porno, he next stars in the funniest stoner comedy of the decade - Pineapple Express. We shot-the-shit with Rogen about everything from smoking weed, to working with David Gordon Green, to the magic of Huey Lewis, and finally, The Green Hornet. If you're a fan of Rogen or are just looking forward to seeing Pineapple Express, be sure to check out this interview before you do! I've already mentioned how much I

Ben Stiller as Tugg Speedman and Robert Downey Jr. as Kirk Lazarus in Tropic Thunder
Photo: Paramount Pictures Just when I was beginning to think originality and a real attempt at trying to make people laugh in movies may be at an end, along comes Tropic Thunder. It seems like it has been a long time since a comedy was designed around actual comedy instead of dick jokes, fart jokes, making fun of fat people and embarrassing situations. Tropic Thunder is unique in its own right. This is a comedy with multiple layers and you almost can't believe how much there is to it, considering the genre has become known for its simplicity. Ben Stiller has managed to make a satirical film clever enough to entertain and just dumb enough to cater to those unwilling to look beneath a film's surface. Stiller hasn't gotten a laugh out of me for

Ever since The 40-Year-Old Virgin laid the first row of bricks in Judd Apatow's comedy kingdom, profane tales of arrested development have become so ubiquitous that they're seemingly the only type of comedy Hollywood is interested in producing. Though Apatow started this trend of overgrown man-children and the women who tolerate them, the blame can't rest entirely at his feet. In fact, the two films Apatow has written and directed—Virgin and Knocked Up—help account for where disappointments like Step Brothers go wrong. No matter how absurd the situations can get in Apatow's films, they're always grounded in characters and observations that are recognizably human and unbound by high-concept gimmicks. Working again with frequent partner Adam McKay, his director and co-writer on cartoonishly funny comedies like Anchorman and Talladega Nights, Will Ferrell errs on the side of the outrageous in Step Brothers and winds up trampling all over a great.

Knocked Up star Seth Rogen finds it tough watching TV show Entourage - because his idea for a similar inside-Hollywood expose series was turned down by the same network bosses who greenlighted Mark Wahlberg's project.
Wahlberg's show has become a huge success and Rogen can't understand why HBO bosses didn't pick up on a similar idea he pitched them years before.
The 26-year-old tells Eonline.com, "I just remember feeling really bitter. We thought the stuff we were writing was funny... and it just seemed crazy that no one else liked it.
"You start to question your own sanity. Like, 'Our HBO pilot isn't funny, but Entourage is?'"
Rogen insists the idea he came up with with his Knocked Up co-star Jason Segel would have been a huge hit: "We all used to smoke weed all day instead of working, and we'd just play video games for months on end. But we all really wanted to work and make movies."

George Carlin – who once wryly wondered, "Why do they lock gas station bathrooms? Are they afraid someone will clean them?" – is being mourned by fellow comedians such as Ben Stiller and Jay Leno, not only for being a groundbreaker in entertainment but an individual of great honor. "George Carlin was a hugely influential force in stand-up comedy," Stiller, 42, said in a statement. "He had an amazing mind, and his humor was brave, and always challenging us to look at ourselves and question our belief systems, while being incredibly entertaining. He was one of the greats and he will be missed.

Before anyone sends me hate mail, I’m asking this as a huge fan of Seth Rogen. Trust me, it’s awesome that he’s now in the “A-list” earning big bucks and making these films that not make alot of money but are actually good!
And the last few weeks we’ve been hearing news item after item about the latest projects the Knocked Up star is headlining.
He has two films coming in the next few months - the self-proclaimed “weed action movie” The Pineapple Express (which looks great and I’ve heard nothing less than stellar things about from those who’ve seen it) and Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno. At the moment, he’s filming Observe and Report and production will soon start on Judd Apatow’s Funny People
Then of course, there’s The Green Hornet, which Rogen is not only co-writing and producing,

Latest: Katherine Heigl has upset staff on the set of Grey's Anatomy after withdrawing from the Emmy awards as part of a protest about her character's development on the hit show.
The actress insisted her name be left off the official ballot because she felt her character was awful during the most recent season of the medical drama.
But the move has disgruntled workers on the programme.
A source tells America's Entertainment Weekly, "The show bent over backwards to accommodate her film schedule, and then she criticises the show for lack of material?
"It's an ungrateful slap in the face to the very writers responsible for her Emmy win in the first place."
Heigl won the Best Supporting Actress prize at the Emmys last year. She has since established herself as a movie star with roles in Knocked Up and 27 Dresses.

Baruchel, who briefly appeared in “Knocked Up,” will next be seen in Ben Stiller’s action flick “Tropic Thunder.”

Katherine Heigl has signed on to star in the big-screen adaptation of Carolyn Jessop’s memoir “Escape,” according to Variety.
In her book, Jessop recounts her childhood in the polygamist sect of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints. At the age of 18, she was forced into a marriage with a 50-year-old man; at age 35, she fled with her eight children.
Jessop is also known for testifying against polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs.
Heigl rose to fame after starring opposite Seth Rogen in Judd Apatow’s “Knocked Up.” She recently starred in Anne Fletcher’s romantic comedy “27 Dresses” and will next be seen in Robert Luketic’s “The Ugly Truth.”
I have to admit I always look forward to seeing Katherine Heigl on the screen. There’s just something about her that makes her an utterly likeable actress. She even managed to pull off a charming performance in the weak “27 Dresses.
