We still have four-and-a-half-months left in 2008 and based on the remaining films to be released in August I will say we only have four months left when looking at Best Picture candidates, but at this point I think everyone has seen The Dark Knight and has an opinion one way or another as to whether or not it should be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. Is it fair to ask this question or even offer up an opinion at this point? I think an argument could be made either way, but considering the film was widely praised by the majority of critics save a few currently sits only $19 million away from becoming the all-time #2 film at the domestic box-office I think it is safe to say it is considered a good, if not great, film. Such films are typically reserved for Best Picture nominations... at least when they aren't

Most years I wait until the end of December to begin taking a look at Oscar Contenders, but this year I am going to try and keep up with them as the year goes on as the RopeofSilicon Oscar Contenders section is will be getting a drastic overhaul in the coming weeks. Instead of the simple structure you see now it will be customized based on picture and will continue to update as we get closer and closer to the big day. Hopefully this will not only keep the site (and myself) up to date on what films to keep an eye on, but I hope it also gives you another reason to look at films that aren't based on comic books and superheroes. Of course I can't do this all on my own and I don't intend to. Being the scavenger I am I am going to keep a

David Frank knows more than you. Care to disagree? Normally at this time of Earth's orbit around the sun, I go into hibernation mode for a several weeks, waking up sometime in October. It's the end of the summer movie season and the beginning of the big studio garbage dump-athon, week after week of sh!t movies that no one wants to see because, well, like I just said, they're sh!t movies. Okay maybe 1 or 2 solid films sneak in. But generally, the last 2 weeks of August through September suck. That's just the rule. I didn't invent it. God did. Yet last year.one of the great years of cinema.shattered the law. Okay well, half of it anyways. After the release of Superbad, the last 2 weekends of August 2007 still stunk (unless you dug The Nanny Diaries or Hallo-RobZombie-ween, anyone anyone?) But holy flocking unicorns did September deliver an uppercut of awesome--3:10 to Yuma,

After the black comedy Burn After Reading hits theaters next month the Coen brothers will begin work on A Serious Man and they have cast Richard Kind (best known from "Spin City") and the Tony-nominated actor Michael Stauhlbarg in the lead roles. A Serious Man is a period black comedy set in 1967. The story centers on Larry Gopnik (Stuhlbarg), a Midwestern professor whose life begins to unravel when his wife sets out to leave him and his socially inept brother (Kind) won't move out of the house. The pic is set to begin filming at the beginning of next month in Minneapolis. Joel and Ethan Coen co-wrote the screenplay.

For a total of 312 films from 64 different countries. Wow, I wish I could go. Of the remaining announcements in 3 different sections, the most intriguing would have to be Vincent Cassel playing legendary French gangster Jacques Mesrine in Public Enemy No. 1. It's listed as a "work-in-progress" so I guess that means what will be screened is not the final cut. Another I'm looking forward to is The Lucky Ones which stars one of my favorites, Tim Robbins. It's about some returning soldiers who go on a road trip across America. Check out the full list following.

Joel and Ethan Coen’s latest comedy “Burn After Reading” hasn’t even premiered yet, but the brothers are already working on their next project at full speed.
According to Variety, the Coens have recruited Michael Stuhlbarg and Richard Kind to star in “A Serious Man,” which is currently described as a “period black comedy.”
The story of the flick is set in 1967 and follows Larry Gopnik, a professor whose life starts to break down when his wife plans to leave him and his incompetent brother refuses to move out.
Stuhlberg plays Larry, while Kind stars as his brother. The role of Larry’s wife remains to be cast.
Joel and Ethan Coen also wrote the script for “A Serious Men.” Their next film, “Burn After Reading,” will open this year’s Venice Film Festival Aug. 27, 2008.
Stuhlbarg hasn’t had that much experience on the screen so far, Variety reports.

I'm taking comfort in the fact that even though we're entering the darkest time for new releases since January, it's only going to last three weeks. Then, on September 12th, we'll get Burn After Reading from Joel and Ethan Coen. Does that movie officially kick off awards season? I guess so. The Duchess, Blindness, and Appaloosa follow the next week, and I'm certainly interested in each of those for different reasons.
But even though I know Burn After Reading isn't very far away, it still feels like I'm going to have to wait a lifetime. That's probably because in summer, there are so many things on the wish list, and you usually only have to wait 14 days at the max for something you really want to see. So that extra week is going to be murder...
Anyway, Trailer Addict has two new character featurettes: Meet Osborne (John Malkovich) and Meet

The Coen Brothers are definitely on a roll recently. Not that they were ever at a point where they weren't making great movies in their 24 year career, but coming off of No Country for Old Men, they're some of the most well-respected directors around and their next film already looks fantastic. Joel and Ethan also never take a break. The two have already finished casting their next feature film after Burn After Reading, a period black comedy called A Serious Man. They've cast both Michael Stuhlbarg (seen above left), a Tony-nominated stage actor with little cinematic acting experience, and Richard Kind (seen above right), a character actor whose name you won't necessarily recognize, but his face and voice you will. Not only are these guys fantastic directors, but they write and produce all of their own movies as well. A Serious Man is another original creation written by Joel and

After giving fans the chance to meet clueless gym employee Chad and womanizer federal marshal Harry through character videos, Focus Features let out two other hilarious spots. The brand new videos for "Burn After Reading" introduce two other characters, a disgraced CIA agent Osbourne Cox and a desperate-for-love gym employee Linda Litzke.
The first video to be posted below is entitled "Meet Osbourne". It highlights on the warning given to those who plan on messing with Osbourne stating, "Fired. Robbed. Blackmailed. Don't Play with Cox." The second character video "Meet Linda" describes Linda as a single and available woman who is looking for love in the wrong place.
Starring Brad Pitt, George Clooney, John Malkovich, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton, "Burn" is a dark comedy movie from Academy Award-winning filmmakers the Coen brothers. It has been set to open the 2008 Venice Film Festival on August 27, 2008 and it will hit the

A few weeks back we shared two hilarious character teaser videos for The Coen Brother's Burn After Reading. One of them was for Chad, played by Brad Pitt, the other was for Harry, played by George Clooney. Today we've got two more: one for Osbourne, played by John Malkovich, the other for Linda, played by Frances McDormand. Seeing Malkovich yell is easily one of the funniest things to watch. I thought Brad Pitt was a hilarious addition to this film, but Malkovich looks fantastic and the two play off of each other so well. This looks like it may even be the funniest comedy of the year and another brilliant film from the Coen Brothers, which is amazing considering No Country for Old Men was just last year! How do they do it?! Either way, take a look at these two new hilarious Burn After Reading character teasers. Don't forget

What do you get when you take The Coen Brothers, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, greedy but bumbling health club employees, the unpublished memoirs of a CIA agent, and blackmail? You get Burn After Reading, which looks like another potential classic from Joel and Ethan.
Before we saw anything from this film - posters, trailers, and clips - we heard Clooney talking it up as the conclusion to his "Idiot Trilogy" with the brothers, following O Brother Where Art Thou and Intolerable Cruelty. (Can't we just skip that second one?) And the more we've seen over the past few months, the more we truly understand what he means.
We've been tipped by a Big Picture reader to the existence of another new poster, again inspired by the legendary Saul Bass. The last time we published a poster for this flick, it was unapproved, so we had to remove it.

Brad Pitt is poised to star alongside Mark Wahlberg in "The Fighter," the Paramount Pictures drama about Boston boxer "Irish" Mickey Ward and his unlikely path to become world lightweight champion. Boston native Mark Wahlberg is on board to play Ward, and Pitt will play Dicky Eklund, Mickey's half-brother, a boxer who once knocked down Sugar Ray Leonard during a title fight in which he went the distance with the boxing legend. Dicky threw his gifts away on drugs and a robbery career that landed him a sentence of 10-15 years in state prison -- but he kicked drugs, became a model prisoner and turned his life around. When he left jail, he became Mickey's trainer at a time when Ward was losing fights and was ready to hang up his gloves. Together, the brothers found the spark that led to a remarkable string of victories for Ward and the world title.

The international poster you see below for the Coen Bros.' comedy Burn After Reading recently meandered onto the internets continuing with the Saul Bass theme of the domestic poster but sprinkled with a just a little more cool - as are most international posters. As you may recall, in the film, George Clooney and Brad Pitt play gym employees who find ex-cia agent John Malkovich's memoirs and decide to do a little hapless blackmailing. See the flick September 12th.

Aw, so sweet! Brad Pitt and Zahara went out to lunch with his parents today in France. We love seeing the one-on-one time that Brad and Angelina spend with their kids, which must be even harder to come by with the addition of Knox and Vivienne. We haven't seen a whole lot of the Jolie-Pitt family since the addition of their newest members, but it sounds like we have more ass kicking Angelina and dramatic Brad coming soon. Plus, at the end of this month Brad is expected at the Venice Film Festival to premiere Burn After Reading before bringing it to the Toronto Film Festival in September. Also, it's just been revealed that Angelina's Changeling will be headlining the New York Film Festival in October. Sounds like a lot of red carpets coming up, which are fun but still nothing on those adorable family photos. X17 Online

Four new tv spots recently surfaced on the interwebs for the Coen Bros.' dark comedy Burn After Reading, each focusing on one of the film's main characters. In it, Chad (Brad Pitt) and Harry (George Clooney), with a little half-witted help from Linda (Frances McDormand), find the memoirs of CIA agent Osbourne Cox (John Malkovich) at the gym where they work and decide to blackmail him in the most inept way possible. J.K. Simmons and Tilda Swinton co-star. This flick looks like a seriously good...

Photo: Focus Features I actually added these five new images from Burn After Reading about four days ago but if you don't check out the Movie Stills Page on a regular basis you would have missed it (you really should bookmark that page). Anyway, when I received two new character videos for the new Coen brothers film I figured I may as well remind you about the images at the same time. You can check all five images out right here in the gallery, which now has 13 total pics or you can watch the videos and then click on the thumbnails at the bottom of this article. As for the videos, the two we have today focus on Brad Pitt's character Chad, the gym employee who stumbles upon the memoir of an ousted CIA official played by John Malkovich.
